Monday’s Motivational Moment: A Dream Deferred

Greetings Blog Family,

I want to talk to you about an older gentleman I had a conversation with recently.

We talked about life, goals, and dreams. he told me his story. Growing up as a young boy on the wrong side of the tracks. Gritting his teeth, he made a way for himself in a rough and tough world.

Now in his late sixties, he is retired. Days are filled with morning walks, reading, and the grand children.

He was smiling and happy while telling his story, but his eyes were lacking that sparkle. That shine when you speak of a life fulfilled.

Eventually, he broke down and told the story of his dream to own his own business. Over the years they type of business changed…a record store, a contracting business, a consulting firm. The desire to control his future by owning his own business stayed consistent.

(Special shout goes to Elijah from TheAtHomeCouple.com. That is his song playing in my intro and outro. It is called “Electrik Girl”. Ain’t it tight? He should share his music more.)

“A Dream Deferred” was how he described not achieving his goal or pursuing his dream.

Our conversation was cut short as I had to move along. We exchanged pleasantries, shook hands, and went our separate ways.

Blog Family, that’s some garbage!! I had to move along because I didn’t want to be near that crap.

A Dream Differed? What? Why would you want to do that? It doesn’t make sense to me and I didn’t want to be around that any more.

He was a nice man with good conversation, but to live 60+ years and not pursue one dream is inexcusable….Let’s keep it real, Blog Family. Someone has to stop being polite and tell the truth. Inexcusable! That isn’t what you want, is it Blog Family?

Well, let’s see what you got this week!! Go after your dream, your business, your blog like you never have before.

Realize if you don’t do it now, you will still be talking about it two years from now. Before you know it, you could be that older gentleman I talked about earlier.

Are you living a Dream Deffered?

I HOPE NOT!

    Freddie,

Have you ever thought of being a motivational speaker? I enjoy the videos very much. Keep them coming.

I promise I will keep working on my dreams. Mostly because I know you got those boots strapped up and I don’t want that swift kick.

Darn tootin’! :-) I’m putting the finishing touches on my new blog and preparing it to launch. Then, I’m putting in some effort on another niche site, and probably entering Garry Conn’s contest, if it’s not too late. Then? Back to working on totally, or almost totally, passive income so that I can devote my time writing novels. (Too many dang interests… I’m also listing my hand made jewelry on Etsy)

@ Joe – Inexcusable! Let’s get busy, son!

@ Suite J – Good, J, take it back out and kick it around a little bit. If it is something that you always wanted to do, then do it. I don’t know about doing them daily, but I will keep them coming.

@ Ben – Yeah, I wasn’t going to attack, but there are a few more notches on the meter, so do test the waters. LMAO! Just keep moving towards your goals and dreams, then we will be all good.

@ Adam – Have considered professional speaking, but need to work on my craft. This blog is an excellent practice lab. And you better keep working on them goals because, yes, I always have my boots laced up and strapped tight…ready to provide a well needed kick in the rump!

@ Joe – LOL @ “go to my room”. The Sammich man should be doing stand up!

@ WordVixen – Keep pushing! You can catch up on sleep when you are dead. We got big goals and dreams, and it is going to take a big time commitment. You can do it!

Great post, very inspiration, although it sounds harsh that old man was the epitomy of my fears.

Great post! Too many people I meet, people older than me, tend to admit that they had a dream they never pursued. There are always a plethora of excuses such as fear, finances, or a supposed lack of opportunity. It’s really sad to think that someone can live their whole lives without attempting to pursue their dreams! Thank you for posting this. It’s very thought-provoking and inspiring!

man oh man.. I can see you speaking at the blog conferences now! don’t be alarmed if I storm the stage in my ninja gear and start throwing hot sammiches at the audience – nail shoemoney right in the grill! haha..

deferred dreams goes hand in hand with the so-called deferred lifestyle that many people live. They have a job, have a house, and do their daily 9 to 5, but the passion lacks. They aren’t doing what they truthfully want to be doing, therefor this life becomes deferred. They work, retire and die without accomplishing those dreams… big big topic for sure…

It the video you said “all the lights will never be green.” I once told my partner “If you wanted to drive to California (I’m on the east coast) you wouldn’t wait for all the lights to be green before you start.” Boy he has thrown that right back at me a number of times.

I haven’t always been as successful as I would like but I have always followed my dreams.
