Blog Action Day 08: Poverty

Blog Family,

Blog Action Day is an outstanding idea to raise the awareness of poverty in this world. Maybe it is just me, but I believe that there should not be poverty anywhere in the world. Call me an idealist or searching for an Utopia. I won’t call your wrong I would ask you a question:

What’s so wrong about that?

Blog Action Day is an initiative to tap into the power and reach of the Blogosphere to reach masses of people. They asked that you donate your earnings for the day to the cause. They recognize that everyone doesn’t make money from the their blog, so they at least ask that you post a blog about Blog Action Day 08.

This is my blog posting!

My story is like too many others. I am from a place that would not be the first choice of many people in America. A little city outside of nowhere, full of people struggling to make the ends meet. Growing up as a child with poverty all around is a sobering experience.

I don’t want to paint a doom and gloom picture for me because, it wasn’t. As I grew up and began to have some experiences. I began to really understand what extreme poverty is all about. I started to get the picture that growing up outside of Detroit, Michigan really wasn’t so bad. It became very clear that maybe 85 to 90% of the worlds population would perfer to be my position.

Here’s what I did learn.

Not all people in that situation want to be there. Not all people are milking the system, standing corners asking for money, or even robbing people. Some are there earnestly looking for a way out. Yes, yes they made some mistakes in the life. They were stupid. Some may have done drugs and ruined all the relationships in their life.

Many realize they hit rock bottom. Many just need a hand up. Maybe you could be their hand, there opportunity, or just an encouraging word. Theres the point: DO SOMETHING!

And please keep in mind that these are the poor in the United States that I speak of. The poor of the world is in a far worst situation. Heres the thing, their options are far more limited.

What gets me is that it doesn’t have to be this way.

The human has come too far not to be able to feed the world. It just obviously isn’t our priority.

When does it end?

This is very inspiring. I appreciate the fact that you shared your personal experiences in your post. You’re right, many do just need a hand up. I hope that blogs like yours raise awareness about poverty, so we can start helping those who need it. Thanks for posting!

Hi Talyor, Thanks for blogging about this.

Individuals must take more responsibility for themselves and their environment. It is imperative that people be educated sufficiently to help themselves. Without self respect, there will always be poverty. I don’t think World poverty will be ended through the efforts of governments and big businesses. Money and free food will not end poverty.

@ Rebecca – Thank you for stopping by my site. It was my honor to be a part of this project. The Internet community has more power and opportunity than it thinks. Good to see some initiative in that direction

@ Salwa – You are so right about money and free food will not end poverty. You need a lot more than that. Love would be a great start….oh there I go with my Utopian views again.

    Thanks for commenting.

  4. Great post Freddie good stuff man! I love the fact that you exposed that not all people are looking for freebies or living off the system, but sometimes you just need a hand. I missed the chance to join in this, but I definitely appreciate your post.

@ Joe – Yeah man, this is a truth that sometimes gets swept in with all the people that are living on the system and just taking. There are some good people that just need a hand. I like to ask people, “What if you were in that situation, wouldn’t you just want some help?”

Everyone deserves it in my opinion.

    Thanks for commenting!

I loved this post. I loved it so much, I don’t even mind my video not being ready yet ;)

Man, living in Mexico has been the first time I’ve seen what real poverty is. In the states, if you’re below the poverty level, chances are you still have cable and a phone. In Mexico, they may not own a pair of shoes or have food for their families. I know families there that get by on 300 pesos a week (about $25 USD) for 6 people. It’s incredibly humbling.

    Great job with this Freddie!

I like this post a lot. I recently dedicated all the earnings from my ebook to charity but I think the point you made at the end of the post is right. One day of donations or charity will not solve the crisis forever.

I agree that bloggers can unite and raise a lot of money for charity and donate a lot of money and we should. I think its a great concept and I hope people did do that.

One day doesn’t make a big difference but its something to remind us. Like you said, its an ongoing crisis and we should continually do as much as we can to support those who are not as fortunate as we are. Great post Freddie!

@ Norhafidz – No problem. It was pleasure. Good to see your around here.

@ Brilliant Jeni – There is nothing like witnessing poverty first hand. It is incredibly humbling and something I believe everyone should see. Then when you think the world is coming down on you, you realize that more than likely you are making a mountain out of a moe hill.

@ Enkay – The battle is never over. We, the conscious, must do our part to wake the rest of the world and give what we can, when we can.

Good stuff, Enkay, on the donations! That is/was outstanding!
